Te Manawa Art Gallery Proposal | Palmerston North

The proposal was to provide Te Manawa Gallery and the local Palmerston North community with clear conceptual and architectural direction for the institution’s re-development.

The idea of a gallery ‘stack’ was developed as a way of solving the needs expressed in the Stafford + Leuthart report to provide more of a showcase or ‘signpost’ to the Manawatu region as well as an art gallery that will draw citizens to return and proudly bring their visitors in. The ‘gallery stack’ gives viewers an insight into the history of the local landscape and ecology and provides ways of local business and research institutes to partner with the gallery. The City Council was not returned at the local elections so the Architecture Workshop research to develop future curatorial, and organizational policies for the new facility were shelved.
