Enginering timber Innovation Award. Nailed it ... or is that screwlammed it!

Despite Covid-19 keeping the AW team out of our studio, we celebrated receiving the Engineering Innovation Award and highly commended for the Overall Supreme Award for Lindis Lodge at the 2020 NZ Wood Design Awards from our home-based offices via video conference.

The judges' comments:

Alistair Cattanach has, once again, taken a hands-on approach to resolving a unique architectural design. Using screw laminated spotted gum to form a hybrid gridshell in unison with the steel beams to form the topographic curves of the roof structure. - Andy van Houtte

Innovation happens when challenges are embraced with creative wilfulness. Delivering the complex parametric design of Lindis Lodge roof structure required the invention of the screw laminated hardwood lamella and the structural design and solution of a 'hybrid gridshell' where all components work together as parts of a single entity. A high-level of collaboration, knowledge, blending and ingenuity together have achieved efficient and effective structural solutions perfectly integrated with the breath-taking architecture and landscape. - Andrea Stocchero

We would like to thank the judges and the sponsors (NZ Timber Design Society and Resene Paints) for the awards.
