NZIA (Canterbury) Public Architecture award
On 6 June, NZIA Canterbury awarded AW with the Public Architecture Award for Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall.
Judges Citation:
"This well considered piece of work shows a deep understanding and respect for the buildings purpose and users. The entrance sequence is a beautifully composed, rhythmic series of experiences that clearly establish a sense of place. The internal courtyard is relaxed and calm - the heart of this project, literally and figuratively. The use of recycled brick and the 'war-time proportions' encourage mindfulness and remembrance, while a hint of future vibrancy and celebration can be seen in the connected external spaces. The longroom, which sits alongside the courtyard's flank, is a reflective space - light and ecclesiastical, it is a historic tome to celebrate soldiers lost in distant lands."
