Small Scale Detached Housing: The Vision of What is Possible

In August 2015, as part of a conversation about the suburb, Christopher Kelly presented Architecture Workshop’s housing designs for volume house builder Universal. The presentation was part of the Housing Futures Conference in Sydney, and a key step towards revitalising suburbia. With our quarter acre section heritage, NZ (and Australia) are starting from a low base to build decent density into our cities!

Initially told by local property agents that smaller buildings with bigger backyards and more flexible internal planning would never sell, Kelly found that, in fact, a diversity of housing options was key. Opportunities for co-housing and downsizing sparked public interest and set a precedent for challenging the rhetoric set by estate agents.
